Conflicting with myself

Alright, it's been a couple years, so I figure I'm due for a post. It seems silly to be writing this because no one will read it (except maybe Erika :) ), but I needed to write/vent it out.

So, it seems that over time, I am becoming less and less like everyone around me. I'm afraid by the time I'm 40, I'll be a hermit.  I'm all over the board when it comes to things I do and like.  I've always been this way.  Even in high school, I was a cheerleader, a jock, and a geek.  Guess how many of those there were.  In college, I was a computer engineering major and in a sorority.  Is that even possible you ask?  Yes, it is. They call it a unicorn because it's rare and mystic... That's a lie. I just made that up.  (Add weird sense of humor to my list of issues).

Now, I'm a female software engineer who works with all men. I am literally the only female software engineer at my company. And, while my coworkers are obsessed with all of the latest electronics and technology, I still have flip phone. You see, I prefer to live a more minimalistic lifestyle.  That really doesn't translate to a lot of people in California.  Let's be honest, that doesn't translate to a lot of people anywhere.  The lack of things just makes me happy. I know, it's weird. Don't get me wrong, I'm not hardcore.  I have a tv and I still buy things, but one day my mindset changed and I just didn't want all the things I wanted before and I got rid of a lot of the things I already had. I also don't typically drink alcohol and neither does my husband.  People tend to be uncomfortable with this sometimes.  Oh, and to top it off, most people think I'm weird like this because I'm from Nebraska.  That's just annoying.

Another conflict, Religion. I believe in God and was raised Methodist, but I don't typically call myself a Christian (does the bible even use that word anyway).  I think that Jesus is the example I want to follow, but guess what, if you are some other religion, I think God loves you the same.  How are we to know God didn't show himself to different people in different ways.  The bible says God is Love.  Well, if we know love, then we know God, whether you've heard of him or you call him something else. I've found it's hard to find a church that preaches this view. Trust me, I've been to a lot of them.

Anyway, so this is why it's been rough as an adult finding friends.  When you're young, you're thrown into situations where you are forced to get to know people and the thing you have in common is the school you go to or the team you're on or where you live.  I've found as you get older, it's not so easy.  Your friends tend to be the people you work with because you see them every day (in my case, all men). Who knew that in my early 30's, my biggest problem would be meeting women?

Anyway, this is starting to sound really emo, so I'll wrap it up. I guess I should stop worrying about what I don't have and be thankful for what I have.  Since it's the month of November and people are posting all of their "I'm thankful for..." messages on facebook, here ya go...

Thank you God for my husband who is my best friend and accepts me for who I am.  And, also for my few good friends who are scattered about (p.s. Can you get them to move here? :) )
